Becoming an adept writer involves more than just knowledge of vocabulary and grammar as it depends upon high levels of self regulation, motivation and being self-sustained. Equally creativity and creative writing have been documented in the literature as being linked to the development of problem-solving skills, decision making, intuition, dealing with novel situations and handling uncertainty, whilst building knowledge and intellectual abilities. There are many definitions of creativity but what seems to emerge are ideals of values and outcomes and with the implementation of the Standards for Pre-registration Nursing Education (NMC 2010a), creative learning and writing would seem important in developing future critical thinkers who are fit for purpose.
Therefore for this piece of coursework you will develop a piece of creative writing which is based upon your perceptions of nursing, and applied to your field of practice.
This should be organised as:
1000 words for your story and 200 words for your annotated bibliography (The 3 most important sources you used to form your story).
Please note that NO references are required in the story. You must show the 10 sources (e.g. books, journal articles) you have used in the bibliography.
If you choose to use a quote in your story then this must be placed in a reference list. This will be separate to the bibliography. It will not count as one of your 10 sources, unless also duplicated as an annotation.
To help you further please use these guidelines in conjunction with the detailed power-point slides, with contributions from Alyson Morris, which are available on the Moodle platform.
You must also ensure that you apply the module learning outcomes to the story
Module learning outcomes are – that on completing the module the student should be able to:
Telling Your Story and the Five Elements of a Short Story
You can identify your own scenario which relates to your field of practice. However if you find that you are struggling to find an idea you can discuss this with your seminar or module leader. However as a team in order to help you, we have developed the following short scenarios which relate to all fields of practice.
You may already have identified an appropriate topic/ scenario to write about. If you need some inspiration you could chose one of the narratives from the following list on which to base your creative writing assignment (1000 words approx)
The Five Elements include:
Sources for your bibliography and annotations
Note: Expect to re-draft and develop your initial story ideas in the light of your reading. Your understanding of the learning outcomes and how you can demonstrate these will increase as you read and discuss issues
Good Practice
In accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Council Code (NMC 2015) we have a duty to protect individuals. Therefore please be mindful that you must respect a person’s confidentiality and you should not disclose information to anyone who is not entitled to it. However if you feel that your story relates closely to actual individuals and events you can write a short statement something to the affect:
‘This story bears no relationship to real people and the situation is hypothetical. If however there is some resemblance to an actual events and real people then this is purely coincidental’.
Marking
You will be assessed on your field specific knowledge based upon the module learning outcomes and not on your ability to write a short.
The marking criteria is in your module guide.
