HEALTH PROMOTION: Binge drinking

Binge drinking is a critical problem for young people as it is a widely accepted part of
youth culture. Binge drinking has been defined in numerous ways including “levels of
drinking at risk, or high risk of short-term harm” (Australian Medical Association,
2015) or as consuming five or more drinks on a single occasion (Lange et al., 2002).
Binge drinking has several short-term health consequences including hangover,
memory loss, vomiting, shakiness, and increased risk of injury and/or traffic fatality.
There is also evidence to suggest that binge drinking is associated with increased
violence, engagement in unwanted and/or risky sexual behaviours, and psychological
issues such as lowered self-esteem and conflict within interpersonal relationships
(ReachOut.com, 2016).

Evaluate the website OR the information brochure. In your opinion, is this an
effective source for combatting the issue of binge drinking?
In your evaluation, consider the strengths and weaknesses of TWO elements of the
site/brochure, the persuasive route being employed to change people’s attitude,
factors that may influence the effectiveness of the message being communication
and barriers that may limit the effectiveness of the message.
