HS 200 – Research Project
There are two components to this. First, you will write a paper (details are below). Second, you will create a PowerPoint presentation with your voiceover for each slide explaining the contents of your slides. You are basically giving a summary of the contents in your paper.
The Paper: You will submit this assignment Week 15!
You are writing this in a paper report format, not just answering these bullets! You are also expected to expand on these topics to show your understanding. If you fail to
1. Introduction
Give an overview of your paper and what you plan accomplish by writing this paper.
2. History of Health Informatics
Give an overview of the history of informatics. Your report should state the facts concisely, describe the context and background. You should provide detailed information including the below topics:
· Early medical records systems
· Very early decision support
Describe the process of how they were carried out, the outcomes, why they were successful, or not successful, and the “lessons learned”. Describe what makes these early projects so important?
3. Current issues
Identify ONE real-world project from one of the categories below: your report should include a brief history of the project/topic, what support it has, any evaluation that has been carried out, an assessment of the importance of the project, and the future direction of the project.
· An integrated hospital records system
· A project which uses routinely-collected data to increase knowledge
· The role of IT in any specialist area of medicine
· A clinical procedure which wouldn’t be possible without IT (other than Computed Tomography)
· Computer-controlled pain management
4. Future Prospects for Medical Informatics
Identify a project-in-progress that fits one of the categories below: your report should describe what the project is trying to achieve, how it is going to do it, what are likely to be the obstacles to that achievement and how far it is in the process.
· 24 hour access to patient / client information – what will assist its achievement?
· Any website which empowers patients/clients
· A support group for any disease, e.g. diabetes, or asthma
· Citizens involvement in their own record keeping
· Virtual reality education about health matters (either for a patient or as professional staff training)
· The convergence of health and social welfare information (e.g. here)
5. Conclusions
Your report should draw on available published information and course notes to consider the impact of or need for a strategy.
6. Reference Page
You must use proper APA citation in your reference page.
Note: You MUST use in-text proper APA citation. If you did not think it, and you received information from a source, you MUST cite that in your paper. While you do not need to cite every single sentence, you should acknowledge where the information was received from. Be mindful of using direct quotes. You should be able to summarize what you have learned, not just quote something. This tells me nothing of your understanding of the information you are presenting.
This is a research paper, do not just answer in bullet points. You should articulate your findings in a well thought out paper that contains paragraphs. You can certainly bold your sections, but you are not typing a bulleted list for each topic/subtopic. The paper must be double-spaced, include an introduction page, and a reference page. This paper should be anywhere from 5-12 pages. You may not use more than 5 direct quotations.
The Presentation: You will submit this assignment Week 15!
The presentation should include, but not be limited to:
1. An introduction slide with the title of your topic and your name introducing yourself. Also, include what program you are in and what year in school you are.
2. 2-3 slides including the history of informatics.
3. 2-3 slides describing the topic you chose and the details of the current issues.
4. 1-2 slides for future prospects
5. 1-2 slides for the conclusion
6. 1-2 slides for your references
Do NOT write full sentences for bullet points!! You should be able to have a bullet point that describes that topic or subject and then use the voiceover to explain what the bullet point is about. A full paragraph with the content of your research paper is not acceptable and you will receive a large deduction of points.
LASTLY!!!!
You will take your PowerPoint presentation and post it in the Week 16 Discussion (upload the PowerPoint into the discussion as your first submission).
You will then choose one of your peers to review their PowerPoint and comment on it. Do not write “Good Job”, “I did the same topic”, “I agree”. I will take points off if you do this. Respond to your peer with a genuine, well thought out response.
This project is your final exam.
